Welcome to the Obsolete Computer Museum! Some DecisionsI've come to some decisions about the future of the Museum. First off, I wasn't clear where the monetary cost was occurring. The site itself doesn't cost much, in terms of hosting fees. The cost is in physically housing the computers. I rent a climate-controlled storage unit for the majority of the collection, and that's what costs the most. So, the many offers of site hosting are welcome, but not where the financial burdens lie. It was clear from the messages I've received that most folks don't really care whether I physically have these computers. It's the site that's important. So, donating the physical computers isn't really a problem. I can do that and still keep the Museum without horribly upsetting anyone. And I do have some leads. My preference is to give them to other museums that would physically show them to the public, rather than to private collectors. So I'm going to start down that route, slowly. It will also give me a chance to take new photos, with a good digicam. Message boards! Yep, I've set up message boards. They're in eternal BETA test. Try 'em out! Both the Helpline and the Comments system are now also accessible as RSS 2.0 news feeds. Find yourself a newsreader program and point it at:
3D models: (They require a Java-enabled browser.) Other suggestions? Let me know at computer.museum@gmail.com. Here's my personal site, tom.carlson.org, with (awful) music, (self-congratulatory) health information, (goofy) pictures of me, and (pinko left-wing) political rantings. Lobby:
Exhibits:
I've discontinued the Amazon and Barnes and Noble affiliates programs. No one bought any books. Donations: Virtual and PhysicalIf you have an obsolete computer you would like to add to the museum, send me pictures of the computer along with a description. See existing museum exhibits for the format and style. Send them to:
(I'll return your pictures, too.) I also accept physical donations of old computers. If it's an appropriate model, and I don't already have one, I'll probably be glad to pick up the shipping costs. Just send e-mail to tom@carlson.org. Please note that the Obsolete Computer Museum is a private collection, not a non-profit organization. Donations are not tax deductible. I'm looking into becoming a real non-profit, but it'll be awhile. Click here for Obsolete Computer Museum-related Web Rings!Send comments to computer.museum@gmail.com! (Note the new address. Lots of space to hold photos sent my way.) |
